Do I register and host my domain with the same company?

Let us start by understanding what domain registration and hosting means.

To have your website or domain emails live you require two services, which you must understand to help in managing your domain.

  1. Domain registration – A domain is an address to your website. This is what online visitors will use on their browser to access your website e.g manjemediahosting.com. You need to come up with your preferred domain name and register it with a reputable registrar.
  2. Domain Hosting – A website is a collection of linked files, these files are stored on a server. You rent server space to keep your website files and also host your business emails. This service is what is referred to as hosting.

You can have the two services offered by one company or use different companies for the services.

No one company is perfect for both services if there is they are very few.

It’s not advisable to put all your eggs in one basket.

If your domain is hosted and register by the same company it will be easier for an intruder to take over your domain and website.

This is why it’s highly recommended to separate the two services for security reasons.

The domain is the most important asset that you must own and control. It helps you to manage where your website and emails are hosted.

In the future, if there is a need to change your host, all you need to do is to back up your files from the current host, copy the files to the new host and update your domain settings to point to the new host.

I also know some clients want to have their domain and hosting managed through one account, which is understandable.

However, you have to decide what is important to you, is it convenience or security of your digital assets?
